Girls need a little privacy for a tea party, I was told, as they skipped into Win Green’s Gingerbread Cottage Playhouse and closed the curtains. This beautiful, quick set-up house of hand embroidered and appliquéd cloth (typically taking 15 sewing hours to complete) and metal pole support serves as a getaway outdoors on a sunny day or indoors, inspiring kids’ imaginations. Stitched gingerbread men, cupcakes, lollipops, butterflies and doves welcomed our guests into their pink polka dotted house. All the attention to hand-made detail contributes to a pricier playhouse but parents appreciated the quality. Our little girls were chattering away, organizing their interior space after they released the ruffled curtains and doorway panels from their tiebacks to start their pretend play. Every now and then a head poked out of the window panes to offer mom and me some tea or a hamburger. Dolls, pretend food and books were gathered and brought into the playhouse to expand the story. The girls delighted in creating stories, building their language, preparing them to be successful readers and writers some day!
