“Tiggly Shapes Got Talent” is Tiggly’s newest learning app designed in partnership with Herbert Ginsburg, Columbia’s Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Psychology and Education. With the option to use the brightly colored physical shape toys, kids can stamp the correct shape on their device to complete a question or create their own story. Kids are drawn right in to Star’s invitation to join his game show, where the best shape can win the STAR-tastic trophy. Sad circle, confident Square, and tough Triangle, are given a series of challenges–which one has the most straight lines? or who can make a seesaw with a plank of wood? Teaching early geometry concepts in the context of building math vocabulary–straight even sides, most straight lines, balances on a point–makes this a terrific language learning experience, as well as early literacy activity as words are highlighted when spoken by Star. Kids are taught some social language too as they encourage mopey Circle or remind competitive Triangle on how to behave to keep friends. Kids always like the playground where they can move the shapes around, dress them as characters such as an astronaut, policeman, cowboy or even a piece of pizza, with corresponding sound effects. Change the setting to a night sky, desert, city or park to lead your little authors in their story. Fascinated with recording and hearing their story, kids reinforce listening skills as they enjoy their creation. Finally, make up a new script to Star’s story illustrations or read the original, adding your voice to the game.
