I think the verdict is still out on how, when and how much technology inserted into toys and games is beneficial for learning and the whole child. Playmobil will always be a favorite of mine for its open ended creative play!

As time pass by, toys that are created by different companies become too technical. Those toys are not so good for kids. It doesn't allow them to develop and think while playing. Even their bodies doesn't have any movement while playing it. Sometimes, those old toys are better than new one because those old toys are developmental.

"Good readers construct mental images as they read a text" - isn't that why we are then disappointed when we read a book and then go to see a movie and it really isn't the same?! At least that is the way I am, I always prefer the pictures in my head!!

On the same theme I am really enjoying using Rory's Story Cubes at the moment - I find that by helping kids to visualize the story they are going to tell, the quality of their narriative improves. The cubes stay there as a prompt and a reminder so they don't have to internalize the visual image, it is right there in front of them.

I wrote a review <a href="http://www.kids-games-for-speech-therapy.com/rorys-story-cubes.html" rel="nofollow">here</a> of how I am using them in Speech Therapy right now. I bet Catlyn would love them!

Hi Derek,

I would certainly try to find a professional who could evaluate your child before 14 months if there are truly concerns. As far as what are the signs of ASD, there are wonderful articles and helps regarding this information on site such as "Autism Speaks" and "ASHA" which is the American Speech and Hearing Association. Good luck!

I have a three year old and she is currently lined up for a series of evaluation appointments but the waiting period is 8 n- 14 mnths for pretty much all of them. Our GP mentioned ASD but she would not diagnose because she is not sure, but I am very concern. What are the signs I should look for?

I would continue to do what you are doing but maybe just emphasize ending sounds and pick a few simple ones like /t/ /d/ or /m/. A 2 year-old isn't expected to correctly articulate all his end sounds but you are building awareness of final sounds for him.
