Kids love castles and knights defending their turf. Mix in some moulding sand and you have created an opportunity for open-ended pretend play. Use the free standing knight and princess moulds to reside in the castle or squeeze the sand into the top of the tower, crank the handle 3 times and out comes a unicorn, dragon or treasure chest. The sand sticks together so nicely that you have wonderful detail in your characters and props. Moulding materials have always been a staple in my speech therapy sessions as they provide an opportunity for infinite creations, from cannon balls to launch with the catapult to food, beds or a tub for the characters. The castle becomes a mini-playhouse as kids practice their story telling, building language skills, preparing them for reading and writing.
