Geomagworld’s Magicube Story Building Sets proved to be a favorite among students and teachers last year when I brought language learning toys to the classroom. This year’s new Nursery Rhymes set has the same potential to bring out creative physical building of the magnetic blocks to represent a storyline while adding accessory clips to illustrate the story. The set includes clips to accompany eight nursery rhymes–Baa Baa Black Sheep, Jack and Jill, Little Miss Muffet, Incy Wincy Spider, Hickory Dickory Dock, Hey Diddle Diddle, Three Blind Mice, and Humpty Dumpty. Jack and Jill are happy characters starting up the hill toward the well with their bucket, but also have characters slipping and landing at the bottom with some pretty cute farm animals and hay. The incy wincy spider can crawl up 5 magicubes of rain pipe toward the dark cloud and downpour. Out came the sun and dried up all the rain so now we have a clip with the spider happily weaving his web in the sunshine. Repeating nursery rhymes builds auditory memory, as well as pre-literary skills as kids hear rhyming words. Kids are so creative in how they portray the story and role-play with the cubes adding a third dimension to the story telling. Extra questions help kids to expand on the theme of the nursery rhyme, “What do you wear when it rains?” or “How are Jack and Jill feeling?” and “Describe your house.” What an outstanding product to elicit language learning and exploring with words and physical props to build storytelling skills.
