Kids tied on their aprons and began learning the language of cooking–recipe, ingredients, spatula and whisk–as we set out our directions to make a “very vanilla cake.” Mom couldn’t believe we were making a cake from scratch! The recipe card and instructions picture and list all the tools we need for prepping including our color coded measuring spoons and cups as well as our orange star-shaped baking pan. Each card includes an explanation of a “cooking gadget” as well as “ingredient fun fact.” Can I admit that I didn’t know that panko bread crumbs are made from bread without a crust? The 14 kid-sized tools are nice quality and easy for little hands to use. We followed our 10-step directions measuring according to our numbers and fractions matched by color to the writing on the corresponding measuring tool. Our little friends had no trouble cleaning up since it was one instruction #6, right after “Bake your cake.” Kids loved the “optional” step of adding confetti cake sprinkles which we added to both the batter and the frosting. This cooking kit is a parent-child activity that strengthens social language learning and teamwork, following directions, observing, learning and talking about the science of cooking, and math concepts such as fractions. The best part is of course eating the results which were eaten while still warm!
